Havana was for over two hundred years the most important city in the Spanish empire, as the rendezvous port for the annual treasure fleets. The covetous gaze of pirates and privateers licensed by rival European powers was permanently turned upon the city and it was its role as the Spanish imperial treasure chest that imparted to Havana its present architectural character and its impressive renaissance fortifications. Juliet Barclay will accompany you on a morning’s exploration of these and of the grand seventeenth and eighteenth century palaces of which Havana has an embarrass de richesse.
